Is disconnecting the negative terminal enough?
It is critical to disconnect a negative battery terminal before starting any work on your car – any car manual or auto mechanic will tell you that. The negative battery terminal is your ground, which keeps you from getting shocked when working on the engines, the electrical, and the fuel parts of your car.
What should the negative battery cable be connected to?
The positive (red) cable should be attached to the positive terminals on each battery. The negative (black) cable should have one end attached to the negative terminal of the dead battery, and one end grounded.
