264 and DNxHD are very differrent compression schemes. H. 264 can deliver higher quality at lower bitrates because it uses long GOP encoding (among other tricks) which means you may need material from as far as 10 seconds away to reconstruct the image. DNxHD uses i-frame encoding so every frame is self contained.
