Is IPv6 compatible with network protection devices?
Today’s networks, whether they have IPv6 deployed in them or not, are largely IPv6 compatible. All modern operating systems and network devices employ IPv6 dual-stacks, in which IPv6 is turned on by default. Therefore, comparing IPv4 security with IPv6 security is meaningless.
Does IPv6 add security?
IPv6 also supports more-secure name resolution. The Secure Neighbor Discovery (SEND) protocol is capable of enabling cryptographic confirmation that a host is who it claims to be at connection time. This renders Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) poisoning and other naming-based attacks more difficult.
Are there any security tools that support IPv6?
Popular security tools such as Nmap, Metasploit, and THC already support IPv6 scanning and exploitation. Penetration testing companies should support IPv6 testing for the same reason – even a system that is hardened against IPv4 attacks can be vulnerable on IPv6.
Are there any security issues with IPv6 traffic?
If IPv6 traffic is not monitored then it is impossible to know how much IPv6 traffic is on networks, and it is almost a certainty that some IPv6 traffic is being carried. At the user level, IPv6 can be accidentally or deliberately employed to bypass usage and security policies. See here for a list of IPv6 monitoring and testing software .
Is it safe to use IPSEC with IPv6?
Although developed in conjunction with IPv6, deployment problems IPsec resulted in it not being widely adopted in the new IP stack. Similarly, IPv4 has had an adopted version of IPsec that can be implemented for extra security. It is unlikely that the adoption of IPv6 across the globe will stimulate a widespread use of IPsec.
What’s the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 security?
Truth: IPsec is an end-to-end security mechanism, providing authentication and encryption on the network layer. Although developed in conjunction with IPv6, deployment problems IPsec resulted in it not being widely adopted in the new IP stack. Similarly, IPv4 has had an adopted version of IPsec that can be implemented for extra security.
