Is it OK to shake polyurethane?
Tip: Before use, a can of polyurethane should be stirred, not shaken. Shaking can introduce air bubbles in the finish that could make an uneven coat. After the first coat has dried for 24 hours, sand again with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper to remove drips, bubbles and other uneven spots in the coat.
Why should you not shake a can of poly before you use it?
For an oil based polyurethane, such as Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane, use a natural bristle brush. Shaking will create bubbles in the polyurethane that will show up in your finish. If you did accidentally shake the can, let it rest for a while before you use it so that you give the bubbles time to break.
What happens if you shake Minwax polyurethane?

Give the can a shake before getting started. Open up the can and transfer a small amount into a plastic cup or old yogurt container. Put a small amount of finish on the cloth and rub it over the wood. You should be trying to apply an even finish over the whole piece – this is very easy to achieve.

So that’s pretty much all I have to say on sanding between coats of polyurethane! You don’t have to do it if you buy this poly from Minwax and get a second coat on within 12 hours. Can You Spray polyurethane on a rounded surface?
Brushing a rounded, contoured or vertical surface is more likely to create drips. Spray less accessible areas with aerosol polyurethane. Hold the can 8-12 inches from the surface. Tip: Before use, a can of polyurethane should be stirred, not shaken.

Polyurethane is going to accentuate the surface inconsistencies, so before applying the coating, take pains to properly sand the surface you are sealing.
