Is median nominal or ordinal?
The median can only be used for ordinal, interval and ratio data. The median cannot be used for nominal data because the categories don’t have a meaningful order. To find the median, arrange all the scores in order and choose the middle score.
Can median be used for ordinal data?
The median is used with ordinal-level data or when an interval/ratio-level variable is skewed (think of the Bill Gates example). The mean can only be used with interval/ratio level data. Measures of variability are numbers that describe how much variation or diversity there is in a distribution.
What type of data is median?
Finite data set of numbers
| Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic mean | Sum of values of a data set divided by number of values: | (1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 7 + 9) / 7 |
| Median | Middle value separating the greater and lesser halves of a data set | 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 |
| Mode | Most frequent value in a data set | 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 |
Can the median be calculated for a scale variable?
The Median This measure of central tendency can be calculated for variables that are measured with ordinal, interval or ratio scales. If your data distribution has an even number of cases which means that there is no exact middle, you simply adjust the data range slightly in order to calculate the median.
Is mean ordinal?
To put it in the simplest terms possible: Ordinal data cannot yield mean values. The median is a type of average value, like the mean, except that it shows the number that is exactly in the middle of the data, i.e., at the same distance from the highest and lowest value in the dataset.
What scale is appropriate in the calculation of median and mode?
Answer: The mode is used almost exclusively with nominal-level data, as it is the only measure of central tendency available for such variables. The median is used with ordinal-level data or when an interval/ratio-level variable is skewed (think of the Bill Gates example).
Is median affected by extreme values?
Note: The extreme values of a data set don’t affect Mean much. When it comes to Median, the extreme values don’t have any effect, as mode is the central value of the data set.
