Is pi used in music?
Defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, pi pops up in all sorts of unexpected places. The melody corresponds to the digits in pi. Actually, since a piano has twelve notes per octave, not ten, the composer chose to write pi in base twelve. That way each note got its own digit.

Why is the number pi so special?
As we said before, π is irrational, meaning it can’t be expressed as a simple fraction. However, the reason we can’t square the circle is that π is a very special type of irrational number called a transcendental number.
