Is power steering fluid the same as Dexron III?
This has lead to many car makers adopting Dexron and Mercon formulations as their specified automatic transmission fluid like Motocraft Mercon ATF power steering fluid. Besides, as Dexron and Mercon are similar they are considered to be interchangeable. They are usually just Mercon or Dexron III versions.
Is Dexron III backwards compatible?
Dexron-III(F) has the same low-temperature fluidity as Dexron-II(E), for better transmission performance in cold weather. This fluid is backward compatible with all previous Dexron fluids as well as the Type “A” Suffix “A”, and the Type “A” fluids produced from 1949 to 1966.
Can I use Dexron 3 in my power steering pump?
Can Dexron III be used as power steering fluid? Yes, you can. Automatic transmission fluids are some of the safe alternatives to power steering fluids.
Is power steering fluid vehicle specific?
Synthetic power steering fluid is usually specifically engineered for the particular car or system for which it’s being used. Most newer vehicles use synthetic power steering fluid. There are also non-synthetic, mineral-based oil power steering fluids that may be used in applications that accept ATF fluids.
Should I use DEXRON III or VI?
The GM site says to STAY AWAY FROM DEX III, and only use DEXRON VI. Dexron VI is a lot more stable at higher temperatures and lasts longer. It can also be used to top off dexron 3, however, you can’t use dexron 3 if you already have dexron 6 originally in your trans, or if it has been flushed with dexron 6.
Can I use DEXRON III instead of DEXRON VI?
DEXRON-VI can be used in any proportion in past model vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, in place of DEXRON-III (for instance, topping off the fluid in the event of a repair or fluid change). DEXRON-VI is also compatible with any former version of DEXRON for use in automatic transmissions.
Can I use Dexron III in my PowerSteering?
Recommended by ExxonMobil for use in any power steering unit where a DEXRON® or MERCON® fluid is recommended. So it’s fine to put DEXRON VI or DEXRON III in most cars. The thing to be careful of is mixing formulations. Some Chrysler transmissions in particular call for Chrysler-specific fluid, which must be used.
What is the difference between Dexron III and Mercon V?
Dexron III and Mercon a basically the same spec. Mercon V, however, is slightly thicker and has a different friction additive. The owners manual and the trans dipstick tell the proper choice.
Can you use Dexron in power steering?
Some power steering fluids need Dexron like Dexron power steering fluid, or other similar types of ATFs, while other car manufacturers are specific about using fluids that are specialized for the steering wheel but has slightly different properties. Both fluids, however, have similar seal materials that resist the breakdown of hydraulic fluids.
Can transmission fluid be used instead of power steering fluid?
The most common and best power steering fluid substitute is automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Transmission fluid has 85-90% base oil and 10-15% additives. A lot of manufacturers use transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid. This information can be found in your car manual.
