Is there a zoom feature in TeXworks viewer?
The good zoom feature of the TeXworks viewer makes it very fast to check that the correction was successful. In preferences -> general -> untick open corresponding PDF preview with TeX files will not open the internal pdf viewer when you open any .tex file.
Why does TeXworks refresh the pdf preview window?
If I compile by TeXworks, by default, it launches its own pdf previewer/reader (i think…). After I make some changes and compile again, TeXworks would simply “refresh” the preview window, so that I can immediately see the changes because the preview window shows the pdf print at the about the same position of the document, at the same zoom level.
When to use internal viewer or TeXworks internal viewer?
You can use for instance SumatraPDF. Some might say that it’s annoying, but I like TeXworks, and sometimes I even use the internal viewer. This is when I make only a small change in the document. The good zoom feature of the TeXworks viewer makes it very fast to check that the correction was successful.
Why does Windows 7 not open a TeX file?
In preferences -> general -> untick open corresponding PDF preview with TeX files will not open the internal pdf viewer when you open any .tex file. Interestingly, I find windows 7 does not like two instances of the same program opening at the same time so have to use sumatrapdf as well.

The default in the TeXworks version in Ubuntu 10.04 is pdfTeX, which won’t compile LaTeX documents. This is what I did and it worked on my Linux MINT. Then I installed TexMaker and it worked fine.
