So I have two polygon layers, polygons in one layer are greater than in the other one. In some cases it is possible to merge smaller polygons so that they fit within the boundaries of a bigger polygon. Is there a way to do it in QGIS automatically and attribute the ID number of a bigger polygon to all smaller polygons falling within its boundaries?

Trying spatial join did not result: when using Spatial join predicate “within” Qgis only does operation for polygons that do not intersect with any other bigger polygon (see highlighted in yellow on green), and gives NULL for small polygons that are still within one bigger polygon but intersect another bigger polygon.

If you want to actually export the points which intersect your selected polygon to a new shapefile then ” Vector->Geopressing tools->Intersect ” and again tick the “Use only selected features” checkbox. How do I merge two or more layers in ArcGIS?
Answer. Merging in ArcGIS takes the features of two or more layers (or two rasters) and creates one layer. An example of a situation where a merge would be appropriate could be if you have separate point layers representing hospital locations for Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Connecticut,…
How to merge polygons in a GIS task?
I was asked this week to perform a fairly simple GIS task: buffer provincially significant wetlands by 120m, buffer other evaluated wetlands by 30m, and merge the results with an existing wetland layer. This would obviously involve a dissolve process since the buffered wetlands would likely create significant overlap between polygons.
Which is better to merge two shapefiles into one?
If you are having difficulty in getting the Shapefiles to share the same projection and to register on top of each other, I usually find MapWindow is better at re-projecting layers. MapWindow currently only allows the merger of 2 shapefiles so Quantum remains more efficient at merging more than 2 layers.
