What does null evaluate to?
In either of the cases, you can’t say that they are equal, because you don’t know the value of either of them. Therefore, null=null evaluates to not true (false or null, depending on the system), because you don’t know the values to say that they ARE equal. This method is defined in the ANSI SQL-92 standard.
What does false mean in SQL?
It is a where condition to be used when the query should not return any result. Some DBMS supporting boolean values, Postgres for example, are used to work with that instead of the classic where 1=1 . Basically then, where false is the same of where 1=0 .
Is NULL NULL in Snowflake?
An equality or inequality comparison like ‘a’=NULL, ‘a’>NULL or NULL=NULL will always return NULL. If you want a real average, you need to do a SUM()/COUNT(*), which treats the NULL values as 0. An empty string in Snowflake is not equal to NULL, so ” IS NULL returns FALSE.
Why does null = null evaluate to false in SQL Server?
.. in a 3VL ( TRUE, FALSE, NULL ). The expectation of people would conform to 2VL ( TRUE, FALSE, which even in SQL is valid for all other values), i.e. x = x always evaluate to TRUE, for any possible value of x – no exceptions.
Why does null or true always return true?
Because “null Or true” evaluates to true, which is very logical, since if one operand is true with the Or-operator, then no matter the value of the other operand, the operation will return true. Thus it does not matter that the other operand is unknown (null).
Why does null = = undefined evaluate to true?
undefined means a variable has not been defined, or given a value. null is a special object within javascript. Comparing the values using equals == will always give you true because they are both basically the same in value (0, nothing, nada, zip).
Why does the equality predicate 1 = null evaluate to null?
The equality predicate 1 = NULL evaluates to NULL. But NULL in a boolean comparison is considered false. If you do something like NOT ( 1 = NULL ), 1 = NULL evaluates to NULL, NOT ( NULL ) evaluates to NULL and so the condition as a whole ends up evaluating to false.
