Should a name be a primary key?
There should be only one record for each employee. Initially, the name appears to be the perfect candidate for a natural primary key, but let’s take a closer look. For starters, you can’t create the record until you know the employee’s name, because the primary key can’t be null.
What do you name a primary key?
A primary key uniquely identifies each record in a table. The naming convention for a primary key is as in the following: A Primary Key name should use the syntax “PK_”. Each Primary Key name should have a “PK_” prefix.
Should foreign key have same name as primary key?
dept_id is the primary key in the Department table and the foreign key in the Employee table. Though it’s not required that name of a foreign key must be the same with primary key, we have kept it the same as per standard SQL best practices.
Which is the correct naming convention for a key attribute?
While most rules are pretty logical, you could go with some you’ve invited (e.g., you could call a primary key attribute “id”, or “ID”), and that is completely up to you. In this article, I’ll try to use these rules you’ll meet in most cases. Why should you use the naming convention?
When to use a naming convention in a database?
You’ll apply these rules while naming anything inside the database – tables, columns, primary and foreign keys, stored procedures, functions, views, etc. Of course, you could decide to only set naming convention rules for tables and column names. That part is completely up to you. Also, using the naming convention is not the rule, but it’s desired.
Is it OK to use TableName + ID as a PK?
Using the Tablename + Id as the PK for each of these tables destroys the ability to use a base class for these. Just some food for thought. My preference is also ID for primary key and TableNameID for foreign key.
Which is the best naming convention for a PK constraint?
I would separate the naming convention for columns in a few categories: A primary key column. You should usually have only 1 column serving as a primary key. It would be the best to simply name this column “id”. You should also name your PK constraint in a meaningful way. E.g., in our database, the PK of the call table is named call_pk
