Should I scale before k-means?
Yes, in general, attribute scaling is important to be applied with K-means. But the answer is mainly based on the similarity/dissimilarity function you used in k-means. If the similarity measurement will not be influenced by the scale of your attributes, it is not necessary to do the scaling job.
Why scale k-means?
K-Means clusters the similar points together. The similarity here is defined by the distance between the points. Lesser the distance between the points, more is the similarity and vice versa.
Why do we use k-means?
Business Uses The K-means clustering algorithm is used to find groups which have not been explicitly labeled in the data. Once the algorithm has been run and the groups are defined, any new data can be easily assigned to the correct group. This is a versatile algorithm that can be used for any type of grouping.
What is the purpose of the k means algorithm?
K-means is an unsupervised clustering algorithm designed to partition unlabelled data into a certain number (thats the “ K”) of distinct groupings. In other words, k-means finds observations that share important characteristics and classifies them together into clusters.
How are k-means and K-modes related?
A solution for fully categorical data is known as k-modes. This approach is very similar the k-means, but takes the mode of a cluster as the centre and then uses a new measure to calculate the distance between each observation and its cluster centre.
What does k means mean in data science?
K-means is a hard clustering approach meaning that each observation is partitioned into a single cluster with no information about how confident we are in this assignment. In reality, if an observation is approximately half way between two centroids it would be useful to have that uncertainty encoded into the output.
Is the number of clusters k fixed in k-means?
The number of clusters K is estimated from the data instead of being fixed a-priori as in K -means. In addition, while K -means is restricted to continuous data, the MAP-DP framework can be applied to many kinds of data, for example, binary, count or ordinal data.
