Should you lap used valves?
Although some seats may need two or three times of lapping, it is not necessary or good to over-lap the valves. It is unlikely, but possible, to remove too much, and doing so will ruin the valve seat. If you are unable to achieve a consistent grey ring, the seats are probably worn out and will require cutting.
Can you lap valves at home?
Any time you change the seats, re-grind the valves or put new valves into an existing seat, it’s a good idea to lap them in and make sure they are seated. Since valve lapping paste is a highly abrasive pumice, there is a right way, and a wrong way, to do it.
Do you lap titanium valves?
You do not lap the titanium valves at all, if you do that the coating wears off and the valve will live a very short life. Just touch up the valve seats and you’re good to go. You will want to replace both intakes and also throw in a new set of springs.
How long do titanium valves last?
As long as you keep the oil fresh and full, the engine fairly cool and your valves adjusted properly you won’t have any problem with titanium valves, and they’ll last you at least two or three seasons, possibly more.
Can you reface titanium valves?
you CANT make titanium valves as “thin” as a stainless steel valve. you do not use the same grinding equipment to resurface titanium valves as what is used for the generic steel valves… the resultant surfaces will be rough and will lead to cracking…!!!
Is it advisable to lap the valves in an engine?
Anyhow, the debate is generally that in modern engines, it is not advisable to bother lapping the valves, as they are usually machined with such high quality materials these days, that one could potentially cause more harm than good.
Why does head to block cause valve lapping?
However, on most current production engines bolting the head to the block distorts the valve seats way out of cylinder head machining tolerances, mainly due to the deck face of the head bending round the bead in the head gasket and the head bolt loads going through the head.
Can a valve lapping paste make it worse?
Lapping, with a suitably fine paste, can’t make that worse, so can only help. Be aware that if its shimmed followers you will have to reset the valve clearences. Valve lapping is quite a curious engineering process which of necessity I’ve studied in detail over the years.
How do you put a valve on a lapper?
Once the lapper is getting the valve, you start the lapping procedure. Put the lapper in the middle of both hands, and utilizing light weight, pivot the apparatus forward and backward at a slow pace. The movement is like beginning a fire with two sticks.
