Databases will convert any datetime into a UTC epoch to store internally. If that’s the case, it’s recommended to convert all dates to UTC before storing. Don’t use local timezone.
Is datetime stored without timezone?
The timestamp datatype allows you to store both date and time. However, it does not have any time zone data. It means that when you change the timezone of your database server, the timestamp value stored in the database will not change automatically.
Should you store time in UTC?
Rule #1 – STORE DATETIMES IN UTC IN YOUR DATABASE, AND BACK END CODE. When storing dates in the database, they should always be in UTC. If you are not familiar with what UTC is, it is a primary time standard that all the major timezones are based on. The major timezones are just offsets from UTC.
How does DB store timezone?

Do you need to store time zone identifier?
As others have pointed out, the offset from UTC is only for a single point in time, and can easily change for DST and for other reasons. Instead, you should store a time zone identifier, preferably an IANA time zone identifier as a string, such as “America/Los_Angeles”. Read more in the timezone tag wiki.
Which is the best time offset in MySQL?
A timezone abbreviation such as PST is the next highest fidelity. A time offset such as -2:00 is the smallest amount of data in this regard. Some key points: Avoid TIMESTAMP because it’s limited to the year 2038, and MySQL relates it to the server timezone, which is probably undesired.
Where to store UTC time zone in a database?
If using other database platforms, you may instead wish to store the UTC value in a timestamp field. Some databases also have timestamp with time zone, but understand that it doesn’t mean it stores the time zone or offset, it just means that it can do conversions for you implicitly as you store and retrieve values.
