What are contact mics good for?
Contact microphones can be used to amplify sound from acoustic musical instruments, to sense drum hits, for triggering electronic samples, and to record sound in challenging environments, such as underwater under high pressure.
Do contact mics need phantom power?
A passive contact microphone has very high impedance, so if using an amplifier only, your contact mic may sound a bit tinny. If you have a buffered contact microphone or hydrophone, you’ll need to provide 48V phantom power to your mic in order for it to operate.
How do you make a microphone?
Here’s the recipe.
- Remove the woofer from an old speaker. Most speakers can be reverse engineered into DIY mics.
- Attach the speaker to a microphone cable. Remove the screw from the female end of a microphone cable.
- Test your microphone.
- Build a frame or box so your mic can stand up.
- Record with your new, free microphone.
What is a piezo bender?
Piezo actuators convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. This is why they are referred to as “motors” (often linear motors). Piezo sensors convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. “Benders” achieve large deflections relative to other piezo transducers.
How are microphones used in a conference room?
Each seat will require its gooseneck, so that each speaker has their dedicated microphone. So, instead of relying on one or two microphones to hopefully pick up every single person’s voice, gooseneck mics ensure that everyone is heard.
What should I do if my microphone is not working?

Which is the best mic to use for vocals?
Large diaphragm condenser mics are the best choice for vocals while small diaphragm condensers (often called pencil microphones due to their shape) are great for instruments with a lot of detail in the high frequencies, like the aforementioned guitar or violin.
Are there any mics that pick up background noise?
While microphones are growing more intelligent, these mics can still frequently pick up background noise in the room, and generally aren’t of the same quality as dedicated microphones. A bit more on the high-end side, this Polycom mic might be costly, but for a good reason.
