What are natural gas engines?
Compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles operate much like gasoline-powered vehicles with spark-ignited internal combustion engines. The engine functions the same way as a gasoline engine.
What are natural gas engines used for?
Natural gas engines are most commonly used to operate natural gas compressors, electric generators or cogeneration power plants. The engine and driven compressor units can be separately joined by a crankshaft or be of the integral type, where the engine and compressor have a common drive shaft.
What things run on natural gas?
The commercial sector uses natural gas to heat buildings and water, to operate refrigeration and cooling equipment, to cook, to dry clothes, and to provide outdoor lighting. Some consumers in the commercial sector also use natural gas as a fuel in combined heat and power systems.
How do CNG engines work?
CNG enters the engine area via high pressure tubes. The pressure regulator accepts the CNG and reduces its pressure from 3,600 psi to appropriate manifold intake pressure. This same solenoid valve also shuts off the natural gas when the engine is off. CNG mixes with air as it enters the engine’s combustion chambers.
Do natural gas engines have spark plugs?
Either the engine is built to run solely on natural gas, requiring it — unlike a diesel — to use spark plugs for ignition, or it is dual-fuel, combining the natural gas with a small amount of diesel fuel, which is compressed in the combustion chamber until it ignites, a process known as high-pressure direct injection.
What cars use compressed natural gas?
Passenger cars
- Audi A5 2,0 TFSI CNG (planned) (unveiled 12/07)
- BMW 3 Series (E36) 316g CNG.
- BMW 5 Series (E34) 518g CNG.
- Chevrolet Cavalier Bi-Fuel CNG.
- Citroën C3 1,4 GNV man.
- Citroën Berlingo Multispace 1,4 GNV (MPV) man.
- Dacia Logan 1,6 K4M CNG.
- Fiat Panda Natural Power.
Who builds natural gas engines?
Cummins
Our dedicated 100% natural gas engines are manufactured by Cummins, backed by Cummins’ industry leading support network, and are available as a factory-direct option from leading truck and bus manufacturers.
Does Natural Gas damage engines?
Natural gas tends to extend the useful life of the engine’s lubricating oil because it produces less carbon when burned. In conventionally fueled vehicles, engine oil degrades as a result of soot and other impurities from the combustion process that are then absorbed by the oil.
How is natural gas better than gasoline?
Compared to gasoline, compressed natural gas reduces carbon-monoxide emissions by 90 to 97 percent and nitrogen-oxide emissions by 35 to 60 percent. Natural gas is also domestically produced, for the most part, so driving a CNG car means you’re not dependent on foreign oil.
What is a CNG truck?
Compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel trucks are designed for high performance in a broad range of applications. And switching to natural gas can lead to significant fuel cost savings.
What is Cummins diesel?
The Cummins L-series engine is a straight-six diesel engine designed and produced by Cummins. It displaces 10 litres (610.2 cu in), and began production in 1982 as the L10 at the Jamestown Engine Plant in Jamestown, New York.
Is diesel natural gas?
To compare natural gas and diesel on an energy equivalent basis, both fuels can be described using their BTU values: 1 GJ of natural gas = 947,950 BTU 1 kg of natural gas = 50,020 BTU 1 m3of natural gas = 35,300 BTU 1 ft3of natural gas = 1,000 BTU 1 litre of diesel = 34,210 BTU Natural gas Diesel Litre Equivalent
