What are the different interrupts supported by ARM processor?
The ARM processor has two interrupt inputs both can be thought of as general purpose interrupts. The first is called Interrupt Request (IRQ) and the second is called a Fast Interrupt Request (FIQ).
What is the difference between interrupts and exceptions in arm7?
Hardware interrupts are called Interrupts, while software interrupts are called Exceptions….Difference between Interrupt and Exception :
| Interrupt | Exception |
|---|---|
| Being asynchronous, interrupts can occur at any place in the program. | Being synchronous, exceptions occur when there is abnormal event in your program like, divide by zero or illegal memory location. |
What are the registers used in interrupts?
An interrupt control register, or ICR, is a hardware register in a computer chip used to configure the chip to generate interrupts—to raise a signal on an interrupt line—in response to some event occurring within the chip or a circuit connected to the chip.
What happens when interrupt occurs in ARM?
Whenever an interrupt occurs, the controller completes the execution of the current instruction and starts the execution of an Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) or Interrupt Handler. ISR tells the processor or controller what to do when the interrupt occurs.
What is ARM interrupt?
In the event of an interrupt, the source of the interrupt (like a Timer, Counter etc.) sends a special request to the processor called Interrupt Request (IRQ) in order to run a special piece of code. The special code or function is called as Interrupt Service Routine (ISR).
Why are interrupts asynchronous?
Asynchronous interrupts are generated by other hardware devices at arbitrary times with respect to the CPU clock signals.
What is difference between interrupt and trap?
Traps and interrupts are two types of events. A trap is raised by a user program whereas an interrupt is raised by a hardware device such as keyboard, timer, etc. A trap passes the control to the trap handler and the interrupt passes the control to an interrupt handler.
Who is responsible for enabling and disabling the interrupt?
EA register
This register is responsible for enabling and disabling the interrupt. EA register is set to one for enabling interrupts and set to 0 for disabling the interrupts. Its bit sequence and their meanings are shown in the following figure. It disables all interrupts.
How many interrupt sources does an arm interrupt controller support?
ARM itself came up with a model called Vectored Interrupt Controller (VIC). Sitting directly on the AMBA High Speed bus, the latency is significantly reduced. Being an early generation controller it supports 32 interrupt sources each of which can be routed to either FIQ or IRQ signals.
What is the Register of an interrupt controller?
The interrupt controller has a register (IRQRawStatus) that holds the raw interrupt status— the state of the interrupt signals prior to being masked by the controller. The IRQEnable register determines which interrupts are masked from the processor. This register can only be set or cleared using IRQEnableSet and IRQEnableClear.
How are external pins used in interrupt controller?
The external pins can be used as asynchronous interrupts to wake up the device from sleep modes where all clocks have been disabled or to generate event pulses that are connected to the event system. A separate nonmaskable interrupt (NMI) is also supported by this module.
How does a generic interrupt controller ( GIC ) work?
A Generic Interrupt Controller (GIC) takes interrupts from peripherals, prioritizes them, and delivers them to the appropriate processor core. The Arm GIC architecture has two forms in general use with the A-profile that are also applicable to the R-profile: GICv2 is a memory mapped solution supporting up to eight processors.
