What are the major problems encountered in a DC machine?
4 Major Troubles in a DC Motor with Reasons
- Failure to start.
- Sparking at brushes.
- Vibrations and pounding noises.
- Overheating of DC Motor.
What makes a DC motor weak?
The graphite brushes and commutator of older DC motors can also wear out, causing the motor to fail. If subjected to excessive mechanical load, the motor windings may overheat, damaging the electrical insulation around the wires, and causing the motor to fail.
What is a commutator in a DC motor?
The commutator on the DC generator converts the AC into pulsating DC. On DC and most AC motors the purpose of the commutator is to insure that the current flowing through the rotor windings is always in the same direction, and the proper coil on the rotor is energized in respect to the field coils.
Why is my DC motor sparking under the brushes?
Sparking under the brushes is a commutation problem. Mechanical problems (rather than electrical ones) are usually the cause. First of all, measure the armature current with the DC ammeter to see if the motor is overloaded. If the armature current is OK, concentrate on mechanical problems associated with the brushes.
Why is my DC drive not working properly?
Some of the most common DC drive problems include driver inhibitors. In many cases, outside forces can inhibit the functioning of your DC drive. Before you start looking into problems with the drive itself, it’s important to rule out other common factors that may be keeping your drive from running the motor.
What causes a DC drive to blow out?
Drive damage can cause breakers and fuses to blow out — and in some cases, it may be permanent and call for a full repair or replacement. Grounded motor winding, poor signal isolation and unbalanced armature amps are a few common problems that can indicate that your driver needs repairs.
What to look for in your DC motor?
Maintenance of brushes and commutators can help ensure a long lifetime of your DC motors. What to look for when examining your brushes: If any of these conditions are not met, you should replace your brush.
