What are the methods of selecting a pump?
Before you can select a pump that will fit your needs, you must know four things: 1) the total head or pressure against which it must operate, 2) the desired flow rate, 3) the suction lift, and 4) characteristics of the fluid.
What are the characteristics of pumps?
Pump characteristics—such as flow, pressure, efficiency and brake horsepower—are shown graphically on a pump curve. The first item to look at is the size of the pump.
How do you determine water pump capacity?
- TO CHOOSE A PUMP WE NEED TO KNOW 2 BASIC VALUES: FLOWRATE AND LIFT PRESSURE OR HEIGHT (OR HEAD)
- A: area of the pipe π x (d/2)2 [m2]
- v: speed of liquid (water) in the pipe [m/s]
- Q:
What is the difference between 0.5 HP and 1hp water pump?
For example if an 0.5 HP motor with discharge rate of 200 litres per hour takes 2 hours to lift the water, then an 1 HP pump with higher discharge rate 400 litres per hour can complete the task in less than 1 hour.
How is the characteristic of a pump determined?
The head developed by the pump must match the head required to drive the system as given by the solution to equation 2.67. This is illustrated in Figure 2.25 where the right hand side of equation 2.67 is plotted against Q on the pump characteristic curve graph.
How is the system curve related to the pump curve?
The pump curve is solely a function of the physical characteristics of the pump. The system curve is completely dependent on the size of pipe, the length of pipe, the number and location of elbows, and other factors. Where these two curves intersect is the natural operating point (see Figure 4).
What are the characteristics of a centrifugal pump?
Head, performance curve and affinity laws all contribute to the efficiency of centrifugal pumps. Pumps are generally grouped into two broad categories—positive displacement pumps and dynamic (centrifugal) pumps. Positive displacement pumps use a mechanical means to vary the size of (or move) the fluid chamber to cause the fluid to flow.
How to calculate the power of a pump?
Power can be calculated from these readings, although some assumptions of the power factor and motor efficiency would be required: BHP = (I x V x 1.73 x EFF motor x PF) / 1,000 Equation 1 In our example, a 5 hp 460 volt (V) motor is used and we actually read 450 V and 3.9 amps.
