What causes high insertion loss?
Excessive length is the most common reason for failing insertion loss. Fixing links that have failed insertion loss normally involves reducing the length of the cabling by removing any slack in the cable run. Excessive insertion loss can also be caused by poorly terminated connectors / plugs.
What is insertion loss in coaxial cable?
Insertion loss, expressed as a ratio in dB relative to the transmitted signal power, refers to the amount of signal power lost in transmission due to device interference. Insertion loss is commonly referred to as attenuation. Many factors affect insertion loss including coax cable type and length.
How is coax cable loss measured?
Cable Loss can be measured using the Return Loss measurement available in the cable and antenna analyzer. By placing a short at the end of the cable, the signal is reflected back and the energy lost in the cable can be computed.
Why does the insertion loss of a cable change?
This measurement was taken at 18 GHz; it is a weak function of frequency and cable type. Insertion-loss change is primarily due to the change in conductivity of the silver with temperature. To a lesser extent, the loss tangent of the ePTFE is also a function of temperature.
Why are my coaxial cable connections loosening up?
These not fully tightened connections can loosen up over time, especially if the subscriber moves the box, pressing the coax against the wall or working against the wire bias in any way. Things Come up on the Job: There are a lot of tasks a technician has to perform on an install.
How can we reduce the level of loss in coax cables?
To reduce the level of loss due in the coax cable, the conductive area must be increased and this results in low loss coax cables being made larger. Importantly it is found that the resistive losses increase as the square root of the frequency.
What causes an increase in coax cable attenuation?
Increased attenuation due to braid contamination: Even if a cable is not flexed, there can be a gradual degradation in performance over time. This can be caused by contamination of the braid by the plastictisers in the outer sheath.
