What controls a VGT turbo?
The VNT Turbo has movable vanes on the exhaust turbine. When they are in the ‘closed’ position, they are more restrictive. This causes the turbo to spool much faster. When they are open, they create less backpressure. This means the turbo handles higher boost better.
How is VNT controlled?
So with the VNT control, the VNT system can either be pneumatically, or electronically controlled. In the case of our Toyota turbocharger it uses a servo motor for electronic control of the VNT system, and that also incorporates a position sensor, so there’s some feedback there.
How does VNT turbo work?
These VNT turbochargers are very effective in minimising the effects of turbo lag, resulting in a more responsive throttle especially at low engine speed and much improved torque. These systems work by changing the speed and direction of the exhaust gases onto the turbine wheel.
How does a Holset VGT turbo work?
The Holset VGT uses a turbine stage where the swallowing capacity is automatically varied while the engine is running. This permits turbine power to be set, providing sufficient energy to drive the compressor at the desired boost level wherever the engine is operating.
How do I know if my VGT actuator is bad?
There are numerous symptoms of a faulty or failed actuator, including:
- A flashing engine management light.
- Complete loss of power, causing the vehicle to enter limp mode.
- Intermittent low pressure.
- Low boost.
- Overboost.
- Noise from the turbocharger.
- ECU error symptoms control.
- Fault codes.

Are VGT turbos good?
VGT’s are great for instant throttle response at any engine speed. It has the ability to help meet stringent emissions standards and the capability of doubling as an exhaust brake, but they have several key weaknesses.
Can you clean a turbo actuator?
DO NOT remove the actuator. It is very similar in design construction and function to the IPR valve, and you really cannot clean it. The issue with the VGT is NOT the actuator solenoid, but the vane control (unison) ring that sticks, and without completely disassembling the turbo, you are not going to clean that.
Why do Turbos need back pressure?
On a turbo car, the heat of the spent combustion gas along with the exhaust gas back pressure in the exhaust manifold are responsible for spinning the turbine. So you need back pressure in the exhaust manifold. Where you want to minimize back pressure is in the exhaust after the turbine (from the DP’s on to the tips).
How does variable geometry turbocharger ( VGT ) work?
What seems a recent boom in VNT and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) applications has actually been around a lot longer than most people realise. Where the humble wastegate simply diverts exhaust airflow away from its turbine, VNT units control boost delivery in a very different way.
How to diagnose problems with VNT turbos-professional?
Cycling the key off and on again will usually restore power until the next fault event. Before any conclusion is jumped to, the ECM control circuit must be tested and verified.
How are vanes used in a VNT Turbo?
By the use of moving vanes placed around the circumference of the exhaust turbine, these vanes can alter the speed at which the exhaust airflow hits the turbine and consequently vary the generated boost in the inlet.
How to test the ECM of a VNT Turbo?
Before any conclusion is jumped to, the ECM control circuit must be tested and verified. The test plan in theory is fairly simple: by plumbing a vacuum gauge on the solenoid output line we can measure the negative pressure applied to the turbo actuator.
