What does coherent mean in radar?
In a pulse radar system, coherence describes the phase relationships between the transmitted and the received pulses. Oscillations and electromagnetic waves are described as coherent if their phase relationships are constant. In case of incoherence, these phase shifts are statistically distributed.
What is coherent processing interval in radar?
A coherent processing interval, in radar systems, indicates a group of multiple pulses, usually with the same PRF and frequency. A CPI will generally consist of one or more coherently integrated pulses, and possibly 1 or more fill pulses. PRF and frequency are sometimes changed between CPIs or groups of CPIs.
What is pulsed coherent radar?
In a coherent pulse radar system for transmitting radar pulses having a successive phase relation in adjacent ones of the radar pulses, a phase of the pulses is alternated.
What is coherent pulse interval?
For a coherent radar, the total time to be sampled is referred to as the coherent processing interval (CPI). Figure 5.6. Only a perfect coherence of the radar guarantees that the number of samples per row is constant with the time.
What does it mean to be coherent?
1a : logically or aesthetically ordered or integrated : consistent coherent style a coherent argument. b : having clarity or intelligibility : understandable a coherent person a coherent passage. 2 : having the quality of holding together or cohering especially : cohesive, coordinated a coherent plan for action.
Why are coherent signals important?
In signal processing, the coherence is a statistic that can be used to examine the relation between two signals or data sets. It is commonly used to estimate the power transfer between input and output of a linear system.
What is the difference between pulse radar and continuous wave radar?
A pulsed radar system typically provides greater measurement range compared to a CW radar, such as an FMCW radar system, with lower power consumption. But due to those continuous signals, CW radar systems are more easily detected than pulsed radar systems, especially those with shorter duty cycles.
What is the remedy for blind speed problem?
One solution to the blind speed problem is to use a nonuniform PRF, or staggered PRFs. Adjacent pulses are transmitted at different pulse repetition frequencies. Such configuration pushes the lower bound of blind speeds to a much higher value.
How is the coherence of a radar system determined?
In case of incoherence, these phase shifts are statistically distributed. Whether radar is coherent or not is determined by the type of transmitter. As transmitters different systems can work in the radar, which are either coherent, partially coherent or incoherent.
How does a non coherent radar system work?
Non-coherent Radar Processing A given transmitter system is the self-oscillating POT (P ower O scillator T ransmitter). If such a transmitter is switched on and off by the almost right-angled high-voltage modulation pulse, this transmitter begins to oscillate with a different phase shift with each transmission pulse.
How is the phase relationship of a radar signal determined?
Notice: Low-power master generators with subsequent high-power amplification produce a constant phase relationship between the transmission pulses, i.e. coherence! By means of a circuit gimmick even non-coherent radar sets are able to determine a phase position of the echo signal.
How is the self oscillating pot in a radar system?
A given transmitter system is the self-oscillating POT ( P ower O scillator T ransmitter). If such a transmitter is switched on and off by the almost right-angled high-voltage modulation pulse, this transmitter begins to oscillate with a different phase shift with each transmission pulse.
