Does CPDLC use SatCom?
CPDLC can be used by itself, without ADS-C, and can be transmitted via VHF of SatCom with relatively low latency – basically the message gets where it need to go right away with practically un-noticeable delay. CPDLC text messages are entered on the flight crews CDU (control display unit) keypad.

Both the new Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 have FANS-1/A capability. ATC services are now provided to FANS 1/A equipped aircraft in other oceanic airspaces, such as the North Atlantic. The ICAO work continued after FANS-1 was announced, and continued to develop the CNS/ATM concepts.

FANS can be divided into two parts, Automatic Dependent Surveillance Contract (ADS-C) and Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC). With ADS-C, there are three types of contracts that can be set up by your controller and one set up by the pilot.
How does CPDLC replace voice communications over VHF?
CPDLC also replaces voice communications over VHF relieving the burden on VHF communications which is out of frequencies. FANS Routes allow more direct flights to the destination. Polar Routes allow the aircraft to take advantage of great circle navigation which is a more direct route to countries such as China.
