What does domain renewal mean?
A domain renewal extends your ownership of your domain name by another year or more. This means that you have to renew the domain on a yearly basis if you want to remain the owner of that domain.
What happens after free domain expires?
Day 1 after expiration: The domain will be deactivated and “parked,” indicating that its registration has expired. Other services associated with the domain, such as email, may cease to function. You can renew the domain or set the domain up for auto-renew.
Why do I need to renew my domain?

How much does it cost to renew a Squarespace domain?
If you choose a paid domain, you’ll be charged $20 at the renewal date. If your website expires and your domain passes the renewal period, this deactivates your legacy domain’s automatic renewal. When you reactivate your site, you’ll be charged $20 to renew your domain.
How much does it cost to redeem a domain?
Once a domain goes into the redemption period, it can be obtained by other parties. You may still be able to redeem the domain for up to 30-days by logging into your account and filling out a ticket in our Support system. The fee for reactivating a domain in the Redemption Period is $99.95 + the regular renewal fee.
Is it possible to renew a domain on GoDaddy?
You may be able to register the domain after the registry has released it, but GoDaddy can’t advise when the registry will release a domain for registration. Some domains, such as ccTLDs, may have special requirements for renewals.
