What does good netcode mean?
Netcode is a blanket term most commonly used by gamers relating to networking in online games, often referring to synchronization issues between clients and servers.
How does FPS netcode work?
The tick rate, or simulation rate, tells us how many times per second the game produces and processes data. At the beginning of a tick, the server starts to process the data it received and runs its simulations. Then it sends the result to the clients and sleeps until the next tick happens.
Does Ping matter in fighting games?
If you have, say a 10ms ping (0.01 seconds), your gameplay will seem faster and smoother than playing with 100ms, for example. Other titles like Counter-Strike and Street Fighter V require precise inputs and timing, which would require a much lower ping to play at the top level.
What does Tickrate mean?
Tick rate is the frequency with which the server updates the game state. When a server has a tick rate of 64, it means that it is capable of sending packets to clients at most 64 times per second. These packets contain updates to the game state, including things like player and object locations.
What’s a rollback netcode?
Rollback netcode starts in a unique way, treating both players inputs as local (effectively offline) and their opponents as a remote player. Rather than wait for an opponents data to arrive, each local machine “predicts” what their opponent will do next. If the prediction proves correct, then the game plays smoothly.
How does rollback netcode predict?
Design. GGPO uses a netcode technique called “rollback”. Rather than waiting for input to be received from other players before simulating the next frame, GGPO predicts the inputs they will send and simulates the next frame without delay using that assumption.

How does netcode work in a fighting game?
At its core, netcode is simply a method for two or more computers, each trying to play the same game, to talk to each other over the Internet. While local play always ensures that all player inputs arrive and are processed at the same time, networks are constantly unstable in ways the game cannot control or predict.
Why do companies need to care about netcode?
Both companies and players should care about good netcode because playing online is no longer the future—it’s the present.
