What does SDR mean in ham radio?

Software Defined Radio attempts to place much or most of the complex signal handling involved in communications receivers and transmitters into the digital (DSP) style. In its purest form, and SDR receiver might consist simply of an analog-to-digital convert chip connected to an antenna.
What is SDR scanner?
RTL-SDR is a very cheap ~$25 USB dongle that can be used as a computer based radio scanner for receiving live radio signals in your area (no internet required). The RTL-SDR is also sometimes referred to as RTL2832U, DVB-T SDR, DVB-T dongle, RTL dongle, or the “cheap software defined radio”.

What makes a SDR different from a de modulator?
What distinguishes an SDR is the use of software and digital processing to perform modulation and demodulation. But these other attributes, like transmit power and band coverage, are not part of the (de)modulator. They are part of the other bits of the radio, which will be the same whether that radio is an SDR or not.
Can a SDR be used to change bands?
Indeed, a digital system with a single SDR at its core could hop between multiple bands (and so antennas) with the help of a switching mechanism, whereas a “normal radio” can only TX/RX over bands it’s been made and has antennas for. I’ll challenge this too. The Softrock Lite IIis an SDR and can not change bands — in fact it can’t tune at all.
