What does Servfail mean?
DNS response code SERVFAIL While NXDOMAIN is the DNS server telling you that the domain doesn’t exist, a SERVFAIL is the DNS server telling you, “Hey, I can’t give you the answer for that query.” It could be that there’s a technical problem with the DNS servers.
What causes DNS Servfail?
DNS record lookups can fail for a number of reasons, the most common of which is due what’s called a “ServFail” error. ServFail errors occur when there’s an error communicating with a DNS server. This could have a number of causes, including an error on the DNS server itself, or a temporary networking issue.

DNS responses, in the case of a recursive DNS query, come directly from the DNS server that received our initial DNS query, while in the case of a non-recursive DNS query, the response arrives from the last DNS server the client (PC) queries in order to get the required DNS information.

Why is my Name Server not responding to nslookup?
Just because the name server is advertised in the SOA doesn’t mean you have permissions to query it. There could be a ACL or Match Client configuration to prevent that. The DNS server may be down. Getting a ServFail can mean many things (DNS service is not responding, ACL, DNSSec isn’t properly configured/key expiration, etc.)

Im working on a solaris10 and on opensuse11- and centos -linux.5.4. I have 2 search domains dom1.net dom2.net. Second try, I remove/add a nameserver from resolv.conf and nslookup answer with name and adress.
Which is secondary DNS server does nslookup point to?
Note both DNS servers point to eachother as primary, and loopback as secondary. Both DNS servers have Forwarders to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 and Root Hints enabled. It’s odd because other sites will return a result, but we’ve been having obscure DNS issues and that is the only consistent behavior I can pinpoint on SecondaryDNS.
