In this weeks’ Blog I am going to show you how easy it is to understand UL ratings on Cable. This is often an area of confusion as we have the BS Standard CSA (Canadian Standards Association) & UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Ratings it’s hard to know where to start of which standard to adopt.
Is UL listed important?
When you’re out shopping for electrical devices and supplies for your home project, UL listing is the best way to ensure you’re getting safe, properly designed and manufactured products. A product that bears the stamp of UL listing has been tested and verified that it meets UL standards for safety.
What is UL listed equivalent?
What is a CE mark and is it equivalent to a UL Listing Mark? A CE Marking is a European marking of conformity that indicates that a product complies with the requirements of the applicable European laws or directives.
What are UL listed components?
A UL Functional Safety Listing Mark appearing on a product typically consists of the following required elements:
- UL in a circle symbol.
- Word Listed.
- Words Functional Safety.
- Product name or company name/file number.
- Issue/serial number or alphanumeric control number.
How do you get a UL rating?
For a product to be UL listed, it must be a stand-alone product. UL listed is used to ensure the safety of products that are consumer ready and go on the market. To become UL listed, more product testing is involved than for UL recognized products.
What is UL listing and why is it important?
The Importance of UL Listing. It’s because of this reliance by AHJ organizations that UL listings are so important. The UL has no financial interest in the products they evaluate and approve as their main purpose is to only confirm a products operation safety or request improvements to make a given item more safety.

UL Recognized is verified with this mark and is defined as “testing and evaluation of component products that are incomplete or restricted in performance capabilities.” UL Recognized products will be later used in complete end-products and systems, and may require additional installation precautions…

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an organization that has been around for more than 100 years. If you visit the UL Web site at www.ul.com, you can find the following description: “UL is a world leader in product safety testing and certification.
How do you check UL listing?
It’s pretty simple: reputable manufacturers submit their products for UL testing. If a product passes the test, the manufacturer is allowed to stamp the product with an official UL mark. Look on the back of any quality switch, outlet, light bulb, and other electrical essentials, and you’ll see the mark.
