What forces are involved in airbags?
When a car hits something, it starts to decelerate (lose speed) very rapidly. An accelerometer (electronic chip that measures acceleration or force) detects the change of speed. If the deceleration is great enough, the accelerometer triggers the airbag circuit. Normal braking doesn’t generate enough force to do this.
Is an airbag an active restraint?
While airbags are considered a “passive” restraint and are said to act as a “supplemental” restraint, seat belts are considered an “active” restraint. The difference is, the airbag is automatic and the seat belt must be manually buckled.
How much force is needed to deploy airbags?
Typically, a front airbag will deploy for unbelted occupants when the crash is the equivalent of an impact into a rigid wall at 10-12 mph. Most airbags will deploy at a higher threshold — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.

Do airbags deploy at 200 mph?
If the impact is small or at a low speed, your airbags will not deploy. The inflation system is designed to inflate the airbag quickly, at speeds up to 200 mph, and then to deflate quickly so that your vision and movements are not limited. And all of this happens in about 1/25 of a second.
Why are there no airbags in planes?
There are several reasons that airbags are not used on commercial airliners. Cost, replacement airbag systems for a car cost thousands of dollars and the additional costs to certify the system and all of the components would be extreamly prohibitive. It would probably add at least $10,000.00 per seat.
Do small aircraft have airbags?
“Although airbags have been mandated in automobiles for over a decade, the aviation industry has no such requirement for small aircraft,” noted NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman. “The good news is that over 30 manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and offer airbags as standard or optional equipment.”
