What happens if you over discharge a lead acid battery?
Overcharging a lead acid battery can be just as harmful as undercharging it. If workers leave the battery in a continuously charging state for long periods of time, corrosion of the positive battery plates can occur. Lead acid batteries can also get very hot while charging.
What happen when a lead battery is fully discharged?
At discharge, the lead is converted into lead sulphate (a white powder in the open air) while the sulphuric acid content decreases in the acid solution (i.e., the density drops to 1.0 = only water).
How does discharge rate affect battery capacity?
The charging/discharging rates affect the rated battery capacity. If the battery is being discharged very quickly (i.e., the discharge current is high), then the amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery is reduced and the battery capacity is lower.
How is the charge of a lead acid battery determined?
Full charge is determined by voltage and inflowing current. When, at a charge voltage of 2.45 ± 0.05 volts/cell, the current accepted by the battery drops to less than 0.01 x C amps (1% of rated capacity), the battery is fully charged and the charger should be disconnected or switched to a float voltage of 2.25 to 2.30 volts/cell.
What makes a lead acid battery last the longest?
When choosing a battery size (capacity) for our job, remember that it will last longest if it is never depleted by more than half its capacity …in other words, it is never discharged below 50% state of charge (SOC). Partially discharged batteries should be re-charged as soon as possible.
What to do if lead acid battery goes Hot?
7 .Continue charging until the charger switches off, make sure the charge voltage reading does not exceed 15.0V or that does not get hot to the touch (over 40c). If the charge voltage goes over 15 volts or the battery gets hot discontinue the charge. 8 .Disconnect the charger and allow the battery to sit for 4 hours, check the voltage.
Can a lead acid battery be charged with taper current?
TAPER CURRENT CHARGING The taper current charging method is not recommended as it is somewhat abusive of sealed lead acid batteries and can shorten service life. However, because of the simplicity of the circuit and low cost, taper current charging is extensively used to charge multiple numbers and/or for cyclic charging.
