What happens when you save your map document in Arcgis?
You save a map as a document and store it on your hard disk. If you haven’t saved the map before, you’ll need to provide a name and save it into a folder location. ArcMap automatically appends a file extension (. mxd) to your map document name.

When users add a layer file to their maps, it will draw exactly as it was saved as long as they can get access to the data referenced by the layer.
