What is a common ground used for?
Common ground is the overlap between the positions of parties that may otherwise disagree. “Finding common ground” is a technique people use to facilitate interpersonal relationships.
What is common ground in wiring?
Common ground symbol. Typically, this reference point is the base for all other voltage measurements within the circuit. For instance, if you were to measure the voltage across the upper resistor in a resistive voltage divider, your reference point would not be ground.
Why does a circuit always have to have ground?
If the reference voltage isn’t 0V, the positive voltage supply must be greater than the negative voltage supply. But this normally doesn’t have to be taken into account because normally the line is designed to be 0V. So, in conclusion, a circuit must always have an earth ground or a floating ground in order to operate.
When is voltage no longer an idea ground or common?
Remember, the more-accurate term for what we call “voltage” is really “potential difference” and it only has meaning between two defined points. Whenever there is current flow and voltage drop, the ground/common is no longer idea.
How are grounds and Commons connected to each other?
There are many rules as to how to connect circuit commons to each other, to the chassis ground (if there is one) and to the Earth ground (again, if there is one). Each of these rules has many legitimate exceptions which means the final decision is determined by regulatory requirements, good engineering practice, and performance goals.
Why do electrical devices need to be grounded?
Electrical devices are “grounded” when they connect to grounding devices for safety reasons. Grounding provides a safe “path of least resistance” for stray voltage to follow. Grounding systems direct stray voltage into the ground where it discharges safely instead of building up in places where it will be dangerous.
