What is a external oscillator?
External Clock Oscillator Mode. The External Clock Oscillator mode allows the PIC® MCU to be run from an externally generated logic level signal and that signal used as the system clock source. When this mode is selected, the signal is fed into the OSC1 pin.
What is MCU clock frequency?
Clock frequency is often discussed with respect to the speed of an MCU or processor. A 32 mega Hertz (MHz) clock will cause the associated controller to complete 32 million (M) cycles per second (Hz), which is the same as 32 million instructions processed per second, if one full instruction is completed in each cycle.
What is the difference between internal oscillator and external oscillators?
Main difference is that the internal oscillator is usually a RC type oscillator which is not very accurate. External oscillators can be of type quartz crystal which are far more accurate. Most practical differences I have encountered: Frequency stability (especially across different temperatures).
What is oscillator mode?
A normal mode of an oscillating system is a pattern of motion in which all parts of the system move sinusoidally with the same frequency and with a fixed phase relation. The free motion described by the normal modes takes place at fixed frequencies.
Why do we need clock frequency?
In general, a higher clock speed means a faster CPU. However, many other factors come into play. Your CPU processes many instructions (low-level calculations like arithmetic) from different programs every second. The clock speed measures the number of cycles your CPU executes per second, measured in GHz (gigahertz).
What is an internal oscillator?
A simple oscillator is internally provided and it is overridden when an external clock is applied to Pin 5. The internal oscillator can be used for applications for clock requirements below 130kHz and where maximum passband flatness over a wide temperature range is not required.
What does a master clock do?
A master clock is a precision clock that provides timing signals to synchronise slave clocks as part of a clock network. Networks of electric clocks connected by wires to a precision master pendulum clock began to be used in institutions like factories, offices, and schools around 1900.
