A hidden service is a site you visit or a service you use that uses Tor technology to stay secure and, if the owner wishes, anonymous. The secure messaging app ricochet is an example of a hidden service. Tor developers use the terms “hidden services” and “onion services” interchangeably. 1.
A hidden service calculates its key pair (private and public key, asymmetric encryption). Then the hidden service picks some relays as its introduction points. The hidden service signs the hidden service descriptor with its private key. It then uploads the hidden service descriptor to a distributed hash table (DHT).

The first step in configuring a hidden service is to install Tor. Tor should be packaged for most major distributions, so you can just use your package manager to pull down the latest version.
How often does a hidden service message change?
This is a short signed message created by the hidden service approximately every hour contain a list of introduction nodes and some other identifying data such as the descriptor id (desc id). The desc ID is based on a hash of some hidden service information and it changes every 24 hours. This calculation is outlined later in the post.
