What is Managed Path in SharePoint? A managed path is a location within a web application in which you can have site collections. When you create a web application, there are two managed paths created with it. The first managed path is called the Root “/” path of explicit inclusion type.
The SharePoint Admin Center provides you with an option to change the managed path for sites, created by users. Open the SharePoint Admin Center, navigate to Settings -> Site Creation. Change the setting for Create team sites under to /teams/.

WildCard Inclusion
- Open the SharePoint Central Administrator.
- Go to Application Management-> Manage web application.
- Select the web application and click on the Managed Paths.
- Enter the value in path field and click on the “check URL” button to check if the path already exists.
Unfortunately SharePoint Online does not provide a mechanism for creating new managed paths, either via SharePoint admin center or through PowerShell cmdlets (As of today!). In SharePoint Online, /sites and /teams are the only wildcard managed paths available to create site collections.
