What is a Modbus register list?
Modbus data is most often read and written as “registers” which are 16-bit pieces of data. Most often, the register is either a signed or unsigned 16-bit integer. If a 32-bit integer or floating point is required, these values are actually read as a pair of registers.
What is Modbus register mapping?
The meter Modbus register map defines a set of parameters which are treated as HOLDING REGISTERS, having addresses 4xxxx. According to the Modbus protocol, in response to a request for register 4xxxx of a particular slave device, the Modbus master reads register xxxx-1 from the slave.
How do you read Modbus input register?
The Modbus RTU Function 04 is used to Read Input Registers, (3x register references), in a Modbus Slave device. Registers are addressed starting at zero: meaning registers 1–10 are addressed as 0–9. Modbus Function 04 also includes the quantity of registers to read from the Modbus slave device.
What is a Modbus unit?
Modbus is a communication protocol developed by Modicon systems. In simple terms, it is a method used for transmitting information over serial lines between electronic devices. In a standard Modbus network, there is one Master and up to 247 Slaves, each with a unique Slave Address from 1 to 247.
What are the different types of registers in Modbus?
The type of register being addressed by a Modbus request is determined by the function code. The most common codes include 3 for “read holding registers”, and may read 1 or more. Function code 6 is used to write a single holding register. Function code 16 is used to write one or more holding registers.
What are the functions of a Modbus function?
Modbus functions operate on register map registers to monitor, configure, and control module I/O. You should refer to the register map for your device to gain a better understanding of its operation. You will also find it helpful to refer to the register map as you review the Modbus functions described later in this document.
Is the Modbus protocol a master or slave protocol?
Modbus protocol is defined as a master/slave protocol, meaning a device operating as a master will poll one or more devices operating as a slave. This means a slave device cannot volunteer information; it must wait to be asked for it.
What can a Modbus Gateway do for a non Modbus device?
Modbus gateways are used to connect non-Modbus devices to a Modbus network, or vice versa, effectively acting as a protocol converter. Remapping registers to make a new Modbus slave emulate an old Modbus slave is another application of a Modbus gateway.
