Primary navigation represents the core categories for the interface and the highest level of the IA. This navigation is almost always available from anywhere within the interface and is typically located in the same place from page to page (Figure 6.3).
On page load, only primary navigation is visible within the menu. When a user interacts with a primary menu — through a mouse hover-over or button click/press — secondary links appear in a vertical drop-down or horizontal pop-out display.

What are the different types of structural navigation?
Structural navigation can be further subdivided into two types: main navigation and local navigation. Also called: global navigation, primary navigation, main nav. The main navigation generally represents the top-level pages of a site’s structure—or the pages just below the home page.
Where is the primary navigation on a page?
A horizontally positioned primary navigation at the top of the page. At present, users are accustomed to seeing the primary navigation toward the top of the page and either in a horizontal or vertical format. It is critical for a user to quickly be able to identify the primary ways they can navigate and use the interface.
Main navigation gives shape to a site. In many ways, the main navigation defines the boundaries of the site itself. The main navigation is often presented in a global navigation area, which generally includes the site logo and utility navigation.
Lights , fog sign als, buoys, daybeacons, landmarks, radiobeacons and LORAN- C lattices are the principal aids to navigation shown on MCD charts. The term “navigational aid” is a general term which covers an y instrument, device, chart, method, etc., intended to assist in the navigation of a craft.
