What is a switching relay?
A relay is an electrically operated switch. It consists of a set of input terminals for a single or multiple control signals, and a set of operating contact terminals. The switch may have any number of contacts in multiple contact forms, such as make contacts, break contacts, or combinations thereof.
What are changeover relays used for?
The most common changeover function relays are produced to switch a single feed line (usually positive – position 30) between two active functions in a circuit, the relay is switched manually via a toggle/push switch or remotely through the circuit.

Does it matter which way a relay is installed?
The orientation of the relays shouldn’t really matter. On the bottom of the relay you will see the numbers 85, 86, 87 & 30 marked. 85 & 86 are the terminals connected to the relay coil (the relay control circuit) and 87 & 30 are the terminals connected to the switch contacts (the relay load circuit).
Can a make and break relay be used as a changeover relay?
Tip: you can use a changeover relay in place of a make & break relay by just leaving either the NO or NC terminal disconnected (depending on whether you want the circuit to be made or broken when you energise the relay).
What makes an electromechanical relay more robust than other relays?
The contacts on electromechanical relays tend to be larger and more robust than some other relay types. The larger contacts give them the ability to withstand unexpected surge currents caused by parasitic capacitances present in your circuit, cables, etc.
Which is the best relay for low voltage switching?
Reed relays are thus not ideal for extremely low-voltage applications as their thermal EMF may introduce enough noise to cause errors in your measurements. The small size and high-speed of the reed relay make it a great choice for many switching applications.
What kind of relay is a reed switch made of?
Dry reed relays are made of coils wrapped around reed switches. The reed switch is composed of two overlapping ferromagnetic blades (called reeds) hermetically sealed within a glass capsule that is filled with an inert gas.
