What is a symmetric NAT?
• Symmetric NAT. – A symmetric NAT is a NAT where all requests from the same internal IP address and port to a specific destination IP address and port are mapped to the same external source IP address and port.
How does WebRTC work over NAT?
Once the WebRTC sessions is properly signaled, and accepted, the process of NAT/Firewall discovery and traversal begins. When it is finished, a communication path is established and media can flow. Thanks to these tools, a good chunk of the problematic topology possibilities can be dealt with, and WebRTC can just work.
What does a turn server do?
TURN is a client-server protocol that was created to work around the problems for Voice over IP implementations presented by a NAT. The TURN protocol utilizes a TURN server to relay data from a client to any number of peers. The TURN server then converts this packet into a UDP packet and sends it on to the peer.
Does STUN work behind a symmetric NAT?
STUN does not work with symmetric NAT (also known as bi-directional NAT) which is often found in the networks of large companies. Since the IP address of the STUN server is different from that of the endpoint, in the symmetric NAT case, the NAT mapping will be different for the STUN server than for an endpoint.
What is iceServers?
The RTCConfiguration dictionary’s iceServers property is an array of RTCIceServer objects, each of which describes a single STUN or TURN server to use for negotiation purposes.
Is TURN server needed?
Whenever there can’t be a direct connection between the two devices. For peer to peer, you will need to install and run a TURN server. If you are connecting your devices to a media server (be it an SFU for group calling or any other type of a server), you’ll still need a TURN server.
Is STUN a security risk?
STUN servers do not implement any reliability mechanism for their responses. When reliability is mandatory, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) may be used, but induces extra networking overhead. In security-sensitive applications, STUN may be transported and encrypted byTransport Layer Security (TLS).
Does Microsoft teams use STUN?
STUN connectivity check messages are used to find which caller/called party media paths work, and the best working path is selected. Media (that is, RTP/RTCP packets secured using SRTP) are then sent using the selected candidate pair. The Transport relay is deployed as part of Microsoft 365 and Office 365.
When is turn necessary, symmetric NAT and Port?
A finds from STUN (no TURN) server that its local address and port (Al:Alp) be mapped to server reflexive values (As:Asp), which should only be meaningful between A and STUN server since it’s symmetric NAT. (right?) Similarly, B finds its Bl:Blp be mapped to Bs:Bsp.
Can a symmetric NAT give you the same IP address?
If you ask two different STUN servers for your public IP address a symmetric NAT will give you the same IP address (hopefully) but different ports. We need a TURN server to get out of this mess as in general, symmetric NATs don’t allow the establishment of a direct connection.
What does symmetric NAT mean in WebRTC architecture?
While watching the “NAT Traversal” lesson of Tsahi Levent-Levi’s WebRTC Architecture course I (re)learned the definition of a symmetric NAT from this slide: If you ask two different STUN servers for your public IP address a symmetric NAT will give you the same IP address (hopefully) but different ports.
Why does stun doesn’t work with symmetric NAT?
STUN does not work with symmetric NAT ” Can anyone explain why? Because STUN (external server), cant know which port will be given to the client by NAT-device. In symmetric NAT, client gets unique port (ip:port in pool situation) on each connection
