What is a through-hole components?
Through-hole technology (also spelled “thru-hole”), refers to the mounting scheme used for electronic components that involves the use of leads on the components that are inserted into holes drilled in printed circuit boards (PCB) and soldered to pads on the opposite side either by manual assembly (hand placement) or …
What is Pastemask in PCB?
Solder mask is the solder mask layer, except the pad (surface pads mount pads, plug-in pads, vias) on PCB boards, the other areas should be covered with solder resist ink. It is also usually called solder mask layer or green layer. Solder mask layer can be divided into Top Layers and Bottom Layers.
What is a Pastemask?
The paste mask is used for the chip package and corresponds to the chip component pad. In the pcb assembly processing, a steel plate is usually used to punch the hole on the PCB corresponding to the component pad, and then the solder paste is applied on the steel plate.
What is paste layer in PCB?
Top Solder Paste Layer Shown in Gray. Solder paste is a material used to assist in the soldering of surface mount components on a PCB. The pads on the surface mount components you use in your design will specify solder paste within the exposed copper region (not covered by solder mask).
What is SMT and THT?
Training. Traditionally, through hole technology (THT) was used to construct the vast majority of PCBs. Over recent years, however, the use of surface mounted technology (SMT) has grown in popularity and is increasingly used in place of through hole technology.
Do you need a pastemask for a thru hole pad?
Most through-holes do not use a pastemask. A lot of fabricators have their own rules for low-cost, standard, and advanced processing. Keep that in mind and be sure you review your fabricator’s rules before sending them a Gerber file.
How does paste in hole ( PIH ) processing work?
Many Samtec customers employ Paste-In-Hole (PIH) processing. Very simply put, this is the process of screening solder paste into and around plated through-holes on a pcb, and placing the leads of through-hole components — like connectors — in these prepared through-holes.
What are the requirements for Paste in hole reflow?
First, the insulator body material must be capable of withstanding lead and/or lead-free reflow temperatures. Second, the vertical and horizontal clearance around the leads must be large enough to allow adequate printed solder paste volume.
What kind of stencil is used for Paste in hole?
Samtec provides the recommended stencil aperture and plated through-hole sizes for most connector series capable of being processed using Paste-In-Hole technology on the connector footprint. Samtec’s stencil aperture recommendations are calculated using: Below is a typical PIH recommended stencil for 2mm pitch header strips.
