What is a torque angle?
Put into its most simple terms, torque angle replaces a maximum torque value for a fastener with a specific amount of fastener rotation. After setting a low baseline torque, just to make sure the fastener is set, the fastener is rotated a precise amount to set the final position and clamp load.
What is the most accurate way to measure bolt tension?
BOLT STRETCH – Bolt stretch is the most accurate method. Regardless of the other factors, and no matter how much actual torque it takes to stretch the fastener to the correct length, it’s not properly torqued until it’s properly stretched.
What is the torque setting?
Working on your car means you have to torque parts up when you fit them. Bolts will be tensioned when torquing up. Always use a torque wrench when installing parts on your car!
How can you tell the angle of a ratchet?
This way you can visually check the angle. This is commonly used to ensure bolts are torqued during assembly. If you don’t have access to a torque angle gauge (as rpmerf recommends) or space is tight, here is one possible way estimate the angle with a ratchet:
How to measure torque when ratcheting a bolt?
I think ft/lbs would be a cleaner spec. 90° = quarter turn. 180° = half turn. It’s alright if you are off a few degrees. I typically start with the breaker bar perpendicular (straight out) and do quarter turns, or have it straight off to the left.
When do you need to measure a bolt pattern?
The term “bolt pattern” refers to the number of bolt holes and the diameter of the circle that they form on your wheels. When you need to update or replace the wheels on your vehicle or trailer, having an accurate bolt pattern measurement is key to finding wheels that fit correctly. Luckily, it’s actually really easy to measure a bolt pattern.
How to calculate the torque angle of a bolt?
If we divide one by the TPI count, we get the amount of distance the bolt travels in one rotation (.0416 inch). If the engineers calculated that they wanted, say, 0.010-inch of bolt stretch beyond whatever is induced by the 15 lb-ft baseline, the math calculates out to 86.4 degrees of torque angle.
