What is a Vfork?
vfork() : Vfork() is also system call which is used to create new process. New process created by vfork() system call is called child process and process that invoked vfork() system call is called parent process. Code of child process is same as code of its parent process.
What happens to your threads when you Vfork?
If we call fork(2) in a multi-threaded environment the thread doing the call is now the main-thread in the new process and all the other threads, which ran in the parent process, are dead. And everything they did was left exactly as it was just before the call to fork(2).
Does Pthread use clone?
clone(2) is a Linux specific syscall mostly used to implement threads (in particular, it is used for pthread_create ). With various arguments, clone can also have a fork(2)-like behavior. Very few people directly use clone , using the pthread library is more portable.
What is the purpose of Vfork?
vfork() is a special case of clone(2). It is used to create new processes without copying the page tables of the parent process. It may be useful in performance-sensitive applications where a child is created which then immediately issues an execve(2).
What is the difference between exec and fork?
The fork() returns the PID of the child process. So the main difference between fork() and exec() is that fork starts new process which is a copy of the main process. the exec() replaces the current process image with new one, Both parent and child processes are executed simultaneously.
What is the purpose of vfork ()?
What’s the difference between Fork and pthread in Stack Overflow?
Purpose is to create a new process, which becomes the child process of the caller Both processes will execute the next instruction following the fork () system call Two identical copies of the computer’s address space, code, and stack are created one for parent and child.
Which is a better example, Apache or pthreads?
As far as concrete examples go, Apache might be a pretty good one. It will use multiple threads per process, but to limit the damage in case of problems (among other things), it limits the number of threads per process, and can/will spawn several separate processes running concurrently as well.
What’s the difference between a process and a thread?
Thread share the same virtual address space, memory (for good or for bad), set of open file descriptors, among other things. Processes are (essentially) totally separate from each other and cannot modify each other. What is the difference between a process and a thread?
