What is Arch i386?
According to this SO answer, arch distinguishes between PowerPC ( ppc ) and Intel ( i386 ), not between 32- and 64-bit kernels on x86. So in this context, i386 means an x86 CPU. Check the output of uname -m to find out your machine type. (On Linux, arch is the equivalent of uname -m .)

If Arch became an i386 optimized distro it would but it won’t so it’s not A i386 fork though means that people who want to can take advantage of pacman, Arch’s config methods and Arch-like repositories to build a i386 system, probably as a server or firewall I’d guess.
Is the Linux kernel compatible with the i386 architecture?
Linux kernel doesn’t support the i386 architecture anymore. The support was dropped in 3.8 release, by the end of 2012. Therefore, you can’t even compile it. If you intend to run Linux on a processor that doesn’t support the i686 instruction set, you are supposed to try old (and unsupported) versions of distros.
Can you run Slackware on an i386 computer?
While i have a couple of old 386 computer lying around and would like to run arch on them, slackware works fine. But by all means start a i386 fork. Re: i386 Arch Linux ? There are not much old hardware these days (i386, i486, i586).
