What is considered formation flying?
Formation flying, two or more aircraft traveling and maneuvering together in a disciplined, synchronized, predetermined manner. In a tight formation, such as is typically seen at an air show, aircraft may fly less than three feet (one metre) apart and must move in complete harmony, as if they are joined together.

Can you pay a commercial pilot to fly someone else?
It can also be done pt. 91 if you pay for the flight and hire the pilot yourself. The passengers pay nothing in this scenario. Otherwise, if you are hiring the pilot and they are paying you for some or all of the flight expenses, you need a 135 certificate. Also you need to check with your insurance agent.

Many business-flying exceptions are not listed in FAR 61.113. This rule simply provides the basic compensation or hire requirement and lists some exceptions in subsections (b) through (g). Which is an example of a business flying?
For example, a company manufactures “widgets” as their primary business. They have a corporate flight department, in-house, with private pilots (or better) who fly company employees and customers and guests on “widget” business. The employees, customers, and guests cannot be charged for the flights.
