What is considered IMC?
Instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) are meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud, and ceiling, less than the minima specified for visual meteorological conditions (VMC). ( ICAO Annex 2) VMC are detailed in ICAO Annex 2: Rules of the Air, Chapter 4: Visual Flight Rules.
What is the difference between VMC and IMC?
VMC stands for “visual meteorological conditions”, while IMC is “instrument meteorological conditions”. VMC and IMC should not be confused with VFR and IFR, which are related but have very different meanings for the pilot. During VMC, VFR flight is permitted.
What is a restricted instrument rating?
The Instrument Rating (Restricted) IR(R) permits flight in a wider range of weather conditions, such as cloud, poor visibility and out of sight of the surface.
Why do VFR pilots crash in IMC?
The NTSB determined the cause of the accident to be the noninstrument-rated pilot’s intentional flight into IMC during takeoff, which resulted in spatial disorientation, the subsequent loss of aircraft control, and an uncontrolled descent into terrain.
What are the requirements for an IMC rating?
The UK Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Rating is a syllabus recognised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). An applicant for a UK IMC Rating must meet the following set of requirements. 25 hours total experience as pilot following the issue of a PPL (which may include the training for the IMC rating).
Do you need IMC rating to fly in UK?
The IMC Rating is specifically for UK aeroplane licences. If you already have an EASA pilot’s licence you can apply for a limited IMC. This is easy to obtain, but unfortunately it’s not well recognised outside of the UK.
What happens to IMC rating when you Regrade to LAPL?
Holders of a IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) who elect to regrade to a LAPL will have the IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) removed as the LAPL is a VFR only licence The UK CAA will issue information via Skywise on the impact of the Performance Base Navigation (PBN) regulations on the UK IMC Rating / IR (Restricted)
Can a pilot with an IMC rating be a co pilot?
An IMC Rating (Aeroplanes) / IR (Restricted) entitles the holder of the licence to act as pilot in command or co-pilot of an aeroplane flying under IFR except:
