What is database fragmentation SQL Server?
SQL Server index fragmentation is a common source of database performance degradation. Fragmentation occurs when there is a lot of empty space on a data page (internal fragmentation) or when the logical order of pages in the index doesn’t match the physical order of pages in the data file (external fragmentation).
What is SQL Server heap?
Heaps. A heap is a table that is stored without any underlying order. When rows are inserted into a heap, there is no way to ensure where the pages will be written nor are those pages guaranteed to remain in the same order as the table is written to or when maintenance is performed against it.
How heap is implemented in database?
A heap is a table without a clustered index. Usually data is initially stored in the order in which is the rows are inserted into the table, but the Database Engine can move data around in the heap to store the rows efficiently; so the data order cannot be predicted.
What does logical fragmentation mean in SQL Server?
Logical fragmentation for indexes, or extent fragmentation for heaps in the IN_ROW_DATA allocation unit. This is the percentage of out-of-order extents in the leaf pages of a heap.
How to lower heap fragmentation in SQL Server?
An out-of-order extent is one for which the extent that contains the current page for a heap is not physically the next extent after the extent that contains the previous page. So you can see it is not the free space present in pages allocated to Heap but the varying sequence of pages that creates the fragmentation.
Is it better to create clustered index on heap table?
At the back of head you should also keep in mind that the word fragmentation for HEAP does not have any meaning, how would you define fragmentation for bunch of un-ordered pages. If you really face a scenario where heap table is fragmented and slowing queries it would be better creating a clustered index on table than rebuilding it.
What happens when a table is not on a heap?
If a table is a heap and does not have any nonclustered indexes, then the entire table must be examined (a table scan) to find any row. This can be acceptable when the table is tiny, such as a list of the 12 regional offices of a company.
