Though an input can be from any number of sources, one of the mose common and the easiest to implement, would be a swith. This is known as “debouncing a switch”. …
How does switch Debouncing work?
Debouncing a switch in software is very simple. The basic idea is to sample the switch signal at a regular interval and filter out any glitches. Both approaches assume a switch circuit like that shown in the explanation of switch bounce: a simple push switch with a pull-up resistor.
What is an AVR switch?
Vertical Break Switch, Aluminum (AVR) By USCO. The AVR is a three insulator, vertical break outdoor air disconnect switch constructed primarily of aluminum. Operation is accomplished by rotation of the rear insulator.
So if you are trying to create a system that counts the number of times a button is pressed, you might count individual presses as multiple hits. The solution to this problem is called debouncing.

Where can I find the switch debounce code?
I recommend Jack G. Ganssle de-bouncing guide (it has also C-code examples) and the code suggested by xjedlins (asm code by Elio Mazzocca). Real men don’t use backups, they post their stuff on a public ftp server and let the rest of the world make copies. http://www.edn.com/article/CA621…
How often do you need to debounce A switch?
Gee that’s a lot of code to debounce a single pin. In my experience the maximum time a switch (tactile style) will bounce is less then 30mS so if the value of the inputs (1-x) is stable for > 30 mS it should be ok. I increment a counter everytime a scan returns the same as the last scan.
