What does iostat mean in Linux?
monitoring system input/output device loading
The iostat command is used for monitoring system input/output device loading by observing the time the devices are active in relation to their average transfer rates. The iostat command generates reports that can be used to change system configuration to better balance the input/output load between physical disks.
What is use of iostat?
Description. The iostat command is used to monitor system input/output (I/O) devices (physical and logical) that are loaded, by observing the time for which these devices are active.
How to find the iostat in linux?
The command to display only a specific device is iostat -p DEVICE (Where DEVICE is the name of the drive–such as sda or sdb). You can combine that option with the -m option, as in iostat -m -p sdb, to display the statistics of a single drive in a more readable format (Figure C). Easy to read stats for a single device.

There are five types of error conditions: catastrophic, severe, recoverable, conversion, Fortran 90 and Fortran 95 language.
How do I enable iostat in Linux?
Linux iostat command to report CPU statistics and I/O statistics:
- CentOS. yum install sysstat.
- Ubuntu / Debian. sudo apt-get install sysstat.
- Section 1: the CPU report.
- Section 2: the device utilization report.
- Display megabytes instead of bytes.
- Display extended status.
- Run iostat with a delay.
- Display only one report section.
How do you read iostat output?
The -m parameter tells iostat to display metrics in megabytes per second instead of blocks or kilobytes per second. The 5 parameter causes iostat to recalculate its metrics every 5 seconds causing the numbers to be an average over this interval. The tps number here is the number of I/O Operations Per Second (IOPS).
How do I format in Fortran?
Fortran Formats
- Write the format as a character string and use it to replace the second asterisk in READ(*,*) or WRITE(*,*). READ(*,'(2I5,F10.
- Since a format is a character string, we can declare a character constant to hold a format string.
- We can also use a character variable to hold a format.
Do you need to indicate device name in iostat?
