What is difference between Landsat Collection 1 and 2?
Landsat Collections ensure that all Landsat Level-1 data are consistently calibrated and processed and retain traceability of data quality provenance. Landsat Collection 2 introduces improvements that harness recent advancements in data processing, algorithm development, data access, and distribution capabilities.
What is Landsat ARD?
U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) are pre-packaged and pre-processed bundles of Landsat data products that make the Landsat archive more accessible and easier to analyze, and reduce the amount of time users spend on data processing for time-series analysis.
What are Landsat levels?
Each Landsat scene is processing to one of the three following processing levels:
- Precision and Terrain Correction (L1TP) All Landsat scenes are attempted to process to L1TP, using Ground Control Points (GCPs) and a digital elevation model (DEM).
- Systematic Terrain Correction (L1GT)
- Systematic Correction (L1GS)
How big is a Landsat tile?
Each tile provided measures 5000 x 5000 30-meter pixels. Overall, there are 430 tiles for the conterminous United States; 110 are used for Alaska and 8 are needed for Hawaii.
What’s the difference between Landsat Collection 1 and 2?
In comparison, Landsat Collection 1 Level-2 products are only available via on-demand processing (Surface Reflectance, scene-based), or within Landsat Collection 1 U.S. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) (Surface Temperature, tile-based). The table below provides a brief overview of the differences between Collection 1 and Collection 2 Level-2 products.
Can you use Landsat MSS 1-5 in Level 2?
Landsat MSS 1-5 data cannot be processed into Level-2 products at this time. Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 products require Landsat Collection 2 Level-1 scenes that have been processed to Tier 1 or Tier 2, as well as additional auxiliary data.
How are Landsat Level 2 science products generated?
Landsat Level-2 science products are generated from Collection 2 Level-1 inputs that meet the <76 degrees Solar Zenith Angle constraint and include the required auxiliary data inputs to generate a scientifically viable product.
How does the Landsat ARD reduce data processing?
Landsat ARD significantly reduces the magnitude of data processing, removing the need to download and prepare large amounts of data for time-series investigative analysis.
