What is discrete regulator?
Naim Discrete Regulator is a series regulator, with a power transistor as the series regulating device. Output from the power transistor is monitored at the inverting input of a differential amplifier which is configured, like the subsequent stages, much like a Naim power amplifier.
What is discrete power?
A discrete power supply requires a number of external components to build: a PWM controller, switching power MOSFETs, input capacitors, output capacitors and a power inductor. CCM implies that the inductor does not fully discharge during the switch-off time.
What is discrete wiring?
A discrete wire—also known as a lead or hookup wire—is a single cable or wire conductor that terminates at one connector contact. Multiconductor wire is an umbrella term for wires that feature multiple conductors and strands.
What is discrete semiconductor devices?
A discrete semiconductor has a basic function that cannot be divided up into other functions. An IC, for example, may have a transistor, a diode and other components on it that can all perform different functions on their own or, working in conjunction as a circuit, can perform several functions together.
Can a discrete voltage regulator be used in an audio power supply?
These discrete devices have a fixed output voltage range from +/-3.3V to +/-24V with over 1 Amp of available output current. They can be used to replace the inferior monolithic voltage regulators in audio and eurorack power supply systems to improve the audio power supply performance.
Can a monolithic regulator be replaced with a discrete regulator?
In order to replace a monolithic regulator with these discrete devices in your audio power supply, one must know the polarity, pin-out, and output voltage of the device that they wish to replace. A Digikey search of the part being replaced will usually provide the relative information.
How are voltages measured in a voltage regulator?
Modify the circuit by connecting two 6-volt batteries in series, for 12 volts total power source voltage. Re-measure the diode’s voltage drop, as well as the resistor’s voltage drop, with a voltmeter: Connect three, then four 6-volt batteries together in series, forming an 18 volt and 24-volt power source, respectively.
Which is better IC regulator or discrete voltage regulator?
But with discrete voltage regulators, one can do exactly that. Our discrete voltage regulators have at least 15 times lower output noise than IC regulators. They have 52dB (about 300X) better rejection of any noise coming into them, and 4X better load regulation than any other 3 terminal IC regulator that one can find to compare them against.
